About the show

I’m very excited to present, with support of suchasnone, 6xCone6xHuman where six humans will coax sound through the comfy catacombs of the Conduit Gallery. Bouncing between brick and wood, auditory texture will spring forth from behind closed doors, up stairways and behind nooks and crannies. Stefan Smulovitz, Bahar Khazei, Andrea Wong, Air Creature, Sys_Exy, and Serlöf join forces to bring you a special event showcasing how sound changes when placed in different parts of a building. I was inspired by Edgard Varèse’s piece Poème électronique and the Le Corbusier designed Philips Pavilion both of which were created for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. Inside La Corbusier’s stomach shaped structure Varèse designed a very complex spatialization scheme involving 350 speakers. Using this as my starting point I collaborated with Andrea Wong on spatializing an older building in Deer Lake she had a residency at and found that pointing speakers at walls was very effective. When I saw the layout of the Conduit I instantly imaged how sound could be spun through the different wall materials. So, as a listener of this event I would ask you to consider how sound changes when it hits different surfaces and how those changes affect your response to the sound. Will you find it pleasing? Abhorrent? Boring? Confusing? Come find out on July 26th at 7pm.
